A year-long elective open to 9th through 12th grade, Foundations of Digital Media (formerly Media and Society) started in the fall of 2009. It is crucial to state up front that this is NOT an anti-media class. We will avoid making judgments of what is “good” or “bad” media. By suspending judgements, we can better evaluate the impact of media on ourselves, our communities, our culture, and on the world. As we become more discerning consumers of media content, we will translate the skills into our digital media projects.
Starting with digital photography, students will learn techniques in composition and lighting while practicing different genres of making images. Next, students will dip their toes in video production learning basic shooting and editing skills. All projects are housed on a personal website which students develop and manage throughout the year. We are always adding and revising content. New to the level one class is graphic design and (very basic) audio production. The success of this class - as with any community - hinges on students' willingness to be open, to create an inclusive environment where we explore ideas, criticize content but never people, and question existing paradigms. The media shown in class is chosen for two key reasons: first, each is an example of a particular genre. We cannot participate in our culture, for example, without being subjected to advertising. The second is that each may exhibit characteristics that push the medium into a new or historic space. Explore with us. Join our community either actually or virtually. |
Cleveland Students: Is this class for you?
The best way for me to answer that question is by asking you some questions.
If this sounds like you then, YES, this class is for you. What about equipment? You don't have to provide all of your own equipment. We have a very limited supply of A/V equipment, which is why we are working on partnering with outside agencies for your internships. However, you should have a computer with access to the internet that is fairly robust (that can handle working with audio and video). What about experience? Yes, you should have a little experience. You don't have to be an expert, but you should come to the course with some skills in your area of passion. For example, if photography is your thing then you should have a working knowledge of your camera, how to upload the images to your computer, and how to do simple editing like cropping the image. What kinds of projects will we make? You will use a variety of A/V mediums to tell a story and select one as your preferred method of delivery. In effect, you'll taste all kinds of ice cream to settle on your favorite. Flavors include:
