How to connect with Cleveland's Media Production program
Cleveland High School has a program of study for the digital media arts where students get hands-on experience in audio and visual mediums.
Now, in its third year, the students are hungry for more: more instruction, more experiences outside the classroom, more conversations with professionals.
This is where you come in.
-We need your expertise and technical knowledge.
-We need to know how you got started and what it's like working in the industry.
-We want to visit your studio or production facility.
The work-load is student-focused and student-led. You are the wise sage opening doors.
Opportunities to engage:
Classroom visits: come to our school (corner of 26th and SE Powell) and provide a lesson or two on what you know best: studio lighting, directing actors, video editing, project management, the elevator pitch. I will walk help you craft a manageable lesson aimed a talented yet inexperienced teens. Time commitment for one session: three hours which includes preparation, travel time, teaching time.
Studio visits: one of the most powerful activities for our students is to get them out of the classroom and into your facility. A tour of your production facility, stage, editing suites is crucial in demystifying the industry. Time commitment: one or two hours depending on how long we visit.
Student internships: the best of all possible worlds is to have students job shadow and be mentored by industry professionals. We are proposing a short-term internship where students are 'paid' in credits towards their high school diploma. You provide the project, the instruction, the face-time with a hand-picked student. Time commitment: ten to twelve hours over the course of three months.

a vision for the program
Our vision for this Program of Study in Career and Technical Education is to have a vibrant audio-visual program linked to the professional AV community of Portland. Class time is devoted to project planning, project management, student-centered critiques, sharing of ideas and resources, while outside of class students are working on their projects with the guidance of industry professionals. You can 'employ' our students' talents to assist your projects while mentoring them with theirs. Students participating in this program leave Cleveland with a portfolio of work they can take directly to an employer or institution of higher education.
In due time, there may be an infusion of grant money or donations that will build a working production facility, but I don’t think that’s the smartest way to go. Public schools don’t have the funding to support and maintain our existing (outdated) equipment. Rather than building these silos at each school site, let’s think about the end game. A better, more sustainable methodology is to employ the latest industry methods and materials from the pros. Portland is known as an AV town and is quickly surpassing Austin as the music capital of the US. Let’s engage this vibrant creative community and erase the arbitrary lines between school and “the real world.”
