End of the second semester: all revisions must be completed NO LATER THAN MIDNIGHT on Tuesday, May 30th.
May 1st through the end of the year...
Our last unit of study is social media. Here we will explore our relationship with social media, our relationship with screens, and our digital footprint. Remember, this is not an anti-media environment. We are exploring, as ethnographers of our lives, how much we "media" and what "media" we consume.

Representation in Mass Media
How does the media shape our perception and the construction of race, gender, sexuality, social class?
Before break, on March 16, 20, and 22, we will spend some time thinking about the ways in which mass media "represent" the narratives of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and social class. Be aware that we will just skim the surface of these ideas/issues. We could spend an entire year studying one of these areas alone. Above all, we will plant seeds for further investigation in April when YOU will have a chance to explore ideas more deeply.

Portland Art Museum: Opening of a new exhibit
Invisible Me - Feb 10 - Jun 17 Outdated beliefs about disability have led to a false standard of ‘normal’ in our society that privileges non-disabled individuals. Therefore, those living with invisible disabilities are forced to weigh the risk of repercussions if they choose to outwardly identify. The 1st Annual Awards Ceremony for the 5x5 video project:

Week of December 11th: Before and After
This project is due for EVERYONE on Tuesday the 12. The following students will be PRESENTING their work on Tuesday and Thursday of next week. You were selected at random by the Card Gods (then again, maybe it's not random where They are concerned). Be ready, please, to receive full credit on your "project management" grade. If you are a "back-up" presenter, you must be prepared to go in the event someone is absent or not prepared. However, if all 5 artists are present and prepared, you will not present. If your name is not listed below, you won't get an all-class critique this round, but you will have the opportunity for a critique on the next project. |
A further note on presentations. It's becoming abundantly clear that our class time is not sufficient to have EVERYONE present their work and leave time to work on our projects. Therefore, we will implement a new system starting in 2018. Stay tuned...

Week of November 26th
This week you are working on "Before and After" and/or your Portraits. New Assignment = Before and After Essential Questions: can there be authenticity in photography? For this assignment, you will demonstrate your understanding and abilities with Lightroom.

Week of November 20th AND the Thanksgiving weekend
PORTRAITURE: If we're lucky, we might spend some time this coming weekend with friends and family. Without much direct instruction in portrait photography, I want you to make a photograph of someone (individual or group) with whom you feel a deep attachment. Consider this an exercise in shooting “what you know.” Don’t be thrown off by the word portrait. Your subject can be posed or not; gazing at the camera or oblivious to it. The main thing here is acquainting yourself, photographically speaking, with intimacy. Take as many images as you can (or as they will tolerate with their patience) to give you a set with which to work. Think about 25 - 30 images with different poses, different camera angles, different points of view. When we return from break, we'll begin working with these images. |
Week of November 13th
Each day this week we will split the sessions between critique/new instruction and independent working.
